Former UVA safety and two-time Super Bowl Champion Juan Thornhill is headed to the Cleveland Browns out of free agency. Former Virginia safety and two-time Super Bowl Champion Juan Thornhill has a new home in the National Football League. After spending the first four seasons of his professional career with the Kansas City Chiefs, Thornhill signed a three-year, $21 million contract to join the Cleveland Browns, as first reported on Wednesday by the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Two-time Super Bowl winner Juan Thornhill agreed to terms with the #Browns on a three-year, $21 million contract with $14 million fully guaranteed at signing over the first two years, per sources. Thornhill started 52 games for the Kansas City Chiefs and is a big addition for the Cleveland Browns.

After an impressive career as a defensive back for the UVA football program, the Altavista, Virginia native was selected by the Chiefs with the 63rd overall pick in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Thornhill had an excellent rookie season with three interceptions, but tore his left ACL late in the year and watched from the sidelines as the Chiefs beat the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. Kansas City reached the Super Bowl the next season and the AFC Championship Game the year after that, but came up short of winning it all. This season, the Chiefs reached the mountaintop again and Juan Thornhill played a pivotal role, recording five tackles and a pass breakup in Kansas City’s 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles to win Super Bowl LVII, earning Thornhill his second Super Bowl ring. Thornhill was brilliant in the entire postseason run for the Chiefs, grading at 90.5 on Pro Football Focus over his final five games, the top mark in the NFL among safeties during that period.

In 65 total appearances and 52 starts over four seasons with the Chiefs, Thornhill recorded eight interceptions, one pick-six, 20 passes defended, one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, five tackles for loss, and 234 total tackles. In 2022, Thornhill had three interceptions, nine passes defended and 71 tackles. Recognizing his potential to become one of the top safeties in the NFL, the Cleveland Browns made the move to sign Thornhill to a three-year deal on Wednesday.

  1. Thornhill was the #1 safety acquisition on my board. Hill and Hurst do nothing for me. Clear depth pieces and camp bodies. I expect them to add more too that room. Only Tomlinson and Winfrey are locks, everyone else is battling for a roster spot and rotational role. I still dont rule out them adding to that room via draft, and almost expect them to do so, so they can have a rotational guy they can develop, unless they select a guy at 42 they didn't expect to be there. I think they also need to another edge, probably not free agency now but via draft. 2nd rounder seems like a great spot for an edge type player with an exact role as a rook, if not third round. Depends on if they trade for a wr or not. I would rather sign Hardman and keep my picks. We need cheap 4 year contracts to compete, yet same time we need additions to the wr room. If browns dont land Jeudy, Hop, or Hardman…its hard for me to say this team can compete in this current AFC landscape. Adding a jag wr and rookie isnt helping our qb for long term success. One of those three and a rook will help massively.

  2. I'm very happy with what Berry has been able to do so far this off-season from coaching addictions to being able to add talent for reasonable money…Tomlinson is very good I think people underate him.

  3. If You Don't Be Yourself And Calm Down! You're G Bush Dawg! You G Bush! Don't try to talk faster than a fast talker… Got to make The Opening of the show on point! 🫣🤫😁

  4. Baltimore Ravens Defense is laughing Browns soft and inefficient Defense. These are productive rangy hard hitting safeties(Marcus Williams & Kyle Hamilton & Geno Stone). Look up the grades. Hamilton was highest grade Safety in all of NFL. See you 2023.

  5. Why
I don't get why the Hurst, and Hill signings happened.
Hurst was a 5th round pick, and has played 2 games and made 2 tackles since 2020.
    Hill is even more disappointing.
There is a TON of good, cheap D Tackles out there to sign, and we sign these two guys who seem no better than Tommy Togiai, or Jordan Elliott .
Neither one of these two guys are anywhere the prospect that Malik McDowell was.
    I mean, REALLY ?
With guys like Derrick Nnadi, Greg Gains, Matt Loanidis, A'shawn Robinson, Poona Ford, Dawuane Smoot, and Dante Fowler STILL OUT THERE ?
    I mean, come on Berry.

  6. Hey, I am one of the most positive Browns fans in the world…and have been for very many decades. But, didn’t we hear players saying the defense was going to be special last season as well? Saying this, they should have a much improved defense with a new DC, new DTs and a true Free Safety.
